Common questions
Everything you need to know about Moolah Metric — how it works, how your data is protected, and what's included.
Security & Privacy
Your password is never sent to us — not even once. Instead, your browser turns it into two separate secret keys before anything leaves your device. One key is used to prove your identity when you log in. The other is used to scramble your financial data.
Every balance, account name, and transaction amount is scrambled in your browser before it's sent to our servers. What we store looks like random gibberish — it's completely unreadable without your password. When you open the app, your browser unscrambles it locally so you can read it. We never see your actual numbers.
This is called end-to-end encryption — the same idea used by apps like Signal. The "end" is your device, not our server.
We use PBKDF2-SHA256 for key derivation, AES-256-GCM for field encryption, and standard browser Web Crypto APIs — the same primitives used by leading security-focused software.
No. We only ever receive scrambled data — and we don't have the key to unscramble it. Your password never reaches our servers, so neither does the ability to decode your finances.
If someone broke into our database tomorrow, they'd find a list of random-looking strings. No balances, no account names, no transaction history — just ciphertext. Without your password, it's worthless.
Your password is your decryption key. If you forget it, the scrambled data on our servers can't be unscrambled — not by you, and not by us. There is no back door.
You can still reset your password via email and regain access to your account — but any data you previously entered will remain locked (the old key is gone forever). Think of it like losing the combination to a safe: the safe is still there, but it can't be opened.
Write your password down and store it somewhere physically safe — somewhere you'll be able to find it years from now.
Yes. We store your email address, a hashed version of your login credential (not your password), and encrypted scrambled blobs for all financial fields. We don't store plaintext balances, account names, or transaction amounts — ever. There is no analytics tracking, no advertising, and no third-party data sharing on this platform.
Pricing & Beta
Nothing for your first year. Beta users get 1 year free — no credit card required. After that, it's AUD $10/year, which is about the price of a cheap pint of beer. You can also keep it free by referring a friend.
After your free year, you can subscribe for AUD $10/year to keep full access — or refer a friend to earn another free year instead. Your data stays yours regardless; we won't delete anything without fair warning and a generous grace period.
Every user gets a unique referral link. When someone signs up using your link and gets access, you earn one additional free year — stackable with multiple referrals. Refer three people and you get three more free years on top of your initial year.
Not immediately. After your 1-year free period ends, you'll need either an active subscription ($10/yr) or a referral credit to maintain full access. We'll remind you well in advance, give you a grace period, and you'll always be able to export your data. We won't delete anything without fair warning.
The beta period is effectively the trial: you get 1 year of full access completely free — no credit card required, no feature limits. There's no stripped-down tier to upgrade from. You get everything from day one.
Your Data
No. Moolah Metric is deliberately designed with no bank sync, no open banking, and no third-party data feeds. You enter balances manually or import them from a CSV file you export from your bank yourself. This is a feature, not a limitation — it means your bank credentials never touch us.
Your email address, a hashed login credential (not your password), and encrypted field values. Account names, balances, transaction amounts, and notes are all stored as ciphertext — scrambled strings that can only be decoded by someone with your encryption key (i.e. you).
Export features are on the roadmap. You can currently export CGT and transaction history from the relevant pages. A full data export (all accounts, snapshots, transactions) is planned.
You can delete your account from the Settings page. This permanently removes all stored data from our servers, including all encrypted field values. Deletion is immediate and irreversible.
We would give fair warning well in advance, provide a data export option so you can take everything with you, and not delete anything without a generous notice period. Your data is yours — we would never pull the rug without giving you time to act.

Yes. AUD is the default currency. The app supports Australian-specific account types (superannuation, HECS/HELP), ASX-listed ETFs and stocks, Australian tax concepts (CGT discount, franking credits), and FIRE calculations calibrated to Australian conditions. More regions are planned.
Yes. Super is a first-class account type — you can track your super balance as part of your net worth. The HECS/HELP tracker shows your estimated debt and repayment timeline based on your income and the ATO's annual income thresholds.
Yes. The Holdings page tracks your investment positions with cost basis, current value, and unrealised gain/loss. The Transactions page supports buy, sell, dividend, DRP (dividend reinvestment plan), ROC (return of capital), and interest entries. Live price lookups are also supported.
CGT stands for Capital Gains Tax. In Australia, when you sell an investment at a profit, you may owe CGT on the gain. If you held the asset for more than 12 months, you're entitled to a 50% CGT discount on that gain — so you only pay tax on half of it.
Moolah Metric tracks your buy and sell transactions to calculate your capital gains, applying the discount where applicable. You can review your CGT history from the Transactions page and export it for your accountant or tax return.
DRP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) — instead of receiving a cash dividend, you receive additional shares automatically. Many Australian ETFs and companies offer this.
ROC (Return of Capital) — a payment that returns part of your original investment rather than a taxable profit. ROC reduces your cost base rather than being treated as income.
Both are supported as transaction types in Moolah Metric so your cost base and CGT calculations stay accurate.
When you add holdings with a stock ticker (e.g. VAS, AAPL), Moolah Metric resolves live prices for ASX and global stocks to calculate your portfolio's current value and unrealised P&L. Prices refresh automatically while the app is open and again when you reopen it after being away — so you're always looking at current numbers.
Getting Started
- Go to Accounts and add your financial accounts (bank, ETF, super, property, liabilities)
- Run your first Monthly Sweep to record current balances across all accounts
- Add any investment holdings under Holdings if you have a share portfolio
- Set up your Budget if you want to track monthly spending
- Configure the FIRE Calculator with your income and savings rate
The Monthly Sweep is Moolah Metric's core workflow. Once a month — typically at month-end — you open the Sweep page and enter the current balance of every account. It takes about five minutes. The app uses these snapshots to calculate your net worth over time and show you how your wealth is growing.
Yes. The Import page accepts CSV files in common bank export formats. You can bulk-import transaction history rather than entering it one by one. Check the Import page for supported formats and column mapping instructions.
Yes. Moolah Metric is a Progressive Web App (PWA) — you can install it on your iPhone or Android home screen directly from your browser, and it works just like a native app. It's fully responsive and designed to be usable on small screens.
Moolah Metric works on all modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. If you're on Samsung Internet, we recommend installing it as a PWA from your home screen for the best experience.
You can, but we don't recommend sharing a login. Your financial data is encrypted using your password — only someone with your password can read it. Logging out fully protects your data on a shared device.
If two people in a household want to track their own finances separately, they should each create their own account with their own password.
